ぼくの最初の仕事は、
新聞配達でした。
当時１７才。
朝早くから、
たくさんの新聞を
ポストに入れるだけ。
免許を持ってなかったぼくは、
自転車です。
とても単調な仕事です。
だけど、ぼくは、
その配達が楽しかったのです。
たまに眠い日もありましたが、、
２つの理由
なぜ、新聞配達という
仕事を楽しめたのか？
それには、２つの理由があります。
１つは、ぼくは当時
野球部でした。
なので、朝早くに起きて、
重い新聞の束を担いだり、
自転車で長い距離を走ることは、
足腰の鍛錬や持久力をあげるために
役立つと考えていたからです。
つまり、自分にとって
その仕事に意味を持たせたから
だと思うのです。

さらに、もう一つの理由は、
配達最速記録の更新を
毎日狙っていたからでした。
確実に新聞をお届けすることに加えて、
どれだけ早く配達を終わらせられるか？
どれだけ効率よく周ることができるか？
ということを意識して、
毎日スタートから終了までの
時間を計測していたのです。
必要なこと
記録更新に必要なことは、
２つ。
それは、考えることと
コンディションを万全にすること。
効率的に周ることはもちろん、
スピードを上げたからといって、
事故ってしまっては意味がないので、
より交通安全に配慮しなければいけません。
考えることとは、効率的なまわり方や、
周囲への目配り、そして
自分の体力と相談して、
ペース配分を考えるなど、
常に、自問自答しながらの配達になるのです。
そして、もうひとつは、
当然、記録を更新するためには、
最高のコンディションにするために、
自分の体調管理をきちんとしなければ
いけないわけです。
そんな風にやっていると、
新聞配達という毎日同じようで、
単調な仕事も、
とても楽しく感じられたのです。
エレベーターのないマンションの
階段を駆け上がる時も、
自分のトレーニングと
記録更新へのチャレンジという
意味付けを持たすことで、
やりがいのある取り組みに変わったのです。
その後、、
ぼくは、たくさんの仕事をしてきました。
中には、筆舌には尽くしがたいような
仕事もしてきましたが、
どんな仕事も、楽しく取り組むことが
できました。
そのルーツは、やはり、
新聞配達の時の経験があると思うのです。
それは、
目的意識を持つこと。
どんな仕事にも、
意味を持たられるかどうか？
それは自分次第だと思うのです。
意味があると思えば、意味があるし、
こんな仕事は意味ないと思えば、意味がないし、、
ただ、どうせやるなら、
全ての出来事に意味を、
で、できれば、プラスの意味を持たせると、
人生は厳しくても、、
楽しいものになるんじゃないでしょうか。
今やっている仕事がつまらない、、、
なんて考えている人も、
ちょっと視点を変えて、
“ええとこ探し”をしてみると、
楽しくてやりがいのある仕事に
なるかもしれませんね。
